The more you search for salary tables, the less they’re likely to appear before your eyes... In some places they’re public. In others, they’re pretty much invisible. The few that are visible online vary in their clarity. The most recent info often differs inconsistently in their reporting conventions. They may (at least in different places) be stated in net-of-tax dollars, in gross euros (sometimes with minor internal variations), in internal net-of-tax euro units known as Unit of Account, or even never stated at all. Some are missing the current staff scales.
So my challenge here is to basically compare apples with apples across institutions and areas of service, and to know in each case what the numbers actually mean, net-of-tax or on tax-free gross, in current dollars or in euro equivalents.
Highlights by career grades
Support and early-career grades
The lowest published international or institution-wide bands start around $50,000. But it’s worth noting that ADB’s TI1 is the first grade in its international specialist structure, not a universal graduate or junior salary. YPPs are not actually on this salary matrix for some reason…
Specialists and managers
This is pretty much the most interesting part and is where most internationally recruited professionals will look. The bands overlap quite a lot.
Directors, vice presidents and executives
At the top, public compensation reaches well beyond $400,000. The largest disclosed figure in this comparison is the EBRD President’s £443,000 gross salary (this is about $588,000).
Highlights by bank
ADB offers the cleanest current comparison: a complete 2026 international staff scale in U.S. dollars, effective 1 January 2026.
The benefits package can include things like housing and education support (which can run up to the 50-100k mark), relocation, medical and life insurance, retirement coverage, parental leave and education assistance for as many as three eligible dependent children. See ADB's current salary and benefits guide for more info.
African Development Bank
AfDB’s published ‘current’ grade and salary page still shows the scale effective 1 January 2023. That’s the newest complete public scale available. Not really sure what’s going on there…
Professional salaries are quoted in Units of Account, or UA. One UA is equivalent to one IMF Special Drawing Right.
As with most MDBs (except EIB), their salaries are tax-free. You can also get benefits like relocation and installation support, dependency and education allowances, medical insurance, a staff retirement plan, life insurance, annual leave and home leave.
Inter-American Development Bank
IDB’s 2025 Annual Report provides the international salary structure as of 31 December 2025:
The annual report also mentions that average budgeted benefits equal to about 34% of average salary across grades. This covers stuff like medical, life and disability insurance and accrued termination benefits. Current IDB vacancies describe base salary as net of tax and advertise 24 days of paid time off, eight personal days, health coverage, a defined-benefit pension and relocation or visa support where applicable.
IDB Invest
IDB Invest belongs in its own section. Its latest complete public international salary scale remains the table effective 1 January 2024.
European Investment Bank
EIB publishes all nine of its 2026 base-salary bands. The important difference is that these are gross euro salaries. Staff pay income tax to the EU and are exempt from national income tax under the applicable protocol.
However, EIB employees can receive an annual performance award of up to 35% of base salary. The broader package can include stuff like installation and expatriation allowances, removal expenses, health and accident insurance, family support, access to a European school and daycare, pensions and hybrid working.
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
EBRD doesn’t publish a complete salary table for ordinary staff. However, its 2025 Financial Report does disclose gross pay for senior leadership.
The median for the 37-person senior-management group was £210,000. Eligible members received an average performance award equal to 20% of gross salary in 2025. EBRD deducts an internal tax, while salaries and emoluments are exempt from UK national income tax.
These executive disclosures are useful for understanding the top of the institution. They are not a reliable estimate of what an EBRD analyst, associate, banker, economist or lawyer earns.
Islamic Development Bank
IsDB doesn’t publish a current grade-by-grade salary scale. That makes precise online estimates difficult to trust unless they come from a specific vacancy or offer.
Its Young Professionals Program advertises an internationally competitive tax-free salary, education support, annual tickets, medical coverage for staff and eligible dependants, dependency and spouse allowances, insurance and retirement benefits.
Benefits, benefits, benefits
Base salary is only one part of an MDB offer. Depending on the bank, contract and household, the rest can include:
relocation, installation and expatriation allowances;
housing support;
school fees and education travel for children;
medical, dental, disability and life insurance;
defined-benefit or employer-funded retirement plans;
home leave and annual travel;
performance awards; and
mobility or field-posting benefits.
There is no defensible rule that every MDB package is worth 10%, 20% or 30% more than base salary. The evidence is a bit more specific. E.g. EIB performance awards can reach 35%. Eligible EBRD senior managers averaged 20% in 2025. IDB budgets non-salary benefits at roughly 34% of average salary. IsDB’s disclosed employer pension contribution is 25.9%.
Tax or no tax?
Yup, you’ve heard that MDB salaries are generally tax free. But it’s a bit more complicated than that. Citizenship and residence can still create filing or tax obligations. So it can be a case by case basis.
Currency and location: why the dollar conversion is not enough
The headquarters in this comparison are Manila for ADB, Abidjan for AfDB, Washington, D.C. for IDB and IDB Invest, Luxembourg for EIB, London for EBRD and Jeddah for IsDB.
A converted dollar figure obviously doesn’t tell you what the salary buys. Housing, school fees, transport, spouse-employment options and the currencies in which you save or support family members can change the result dramatically.
And you might think that Manila is much cheaper than Luxembourg, but the cost of healthcare and international schooling could actually be more…
